Chrysler Repair: Intermittent wipers - New Yorker 1989, yorker landau, intermittent wipers

Question
Hi Roland,

I have an 89 New Yorker Landau, with a tad over 80,000 miles on it ...3.0 V6.  All running Beautifully with a super smooth Transmission,  so I guess I am very lucky.  Just one niggle ... the intermittent wiper settings wont work at all, although the wipers work on Hi and Lo speeds (funnily enough they run lo on the Hi setting and Hi on the Lo setting --- is this a clue).  Everything else on the column mounted switch seems fine ..(indicators,  cruise control etc)  so I am loathe to change it ... I can't seem to find any relays for the wiper motor ... is there an obvious fault to be fixed here?

Answer
Hi Martyn,
Yes that is lucky about the trans, so keep babying it.
On the wipers, I have the '89 shop manaul, and it is either the body computer, the wiring or the variable resistor section of the control switch on the steering column. The body computer is located just in front of the passenger side front door opening, near the floor, most likely behind a trim panel. There are a couple of screws at right angles to oneanother holding a moulding in place right at the lower front corner door sill/cowl kick panel and if you remove those and perhaps anyother screws associated with the sill all the way back to the rear of the opening you should be able to lift away that moulding. Then look behind the trim panel for a rectangular box with a black plug and a red plug on the top. One common problem is that water drips down on the top of plugs and shorts out the pins and sockets to oneanother. So see if that might have happened by removing the plugs and spraying with electronic contact cleaner in a spray can. Then replug and see if that fixed it.
If not, then you measure for voltage at several of the pins on the black plug after you remove it from the computer, and turn on the wiper switch to maximum delay. Attach positive voltmeter lead to pins 9 and 22 in succession with the negative lead of the voltmeter attached to the ground (such as the bolt that holds the computer to the body). If you don't get voltage at both those points then check the wiring from the switch to the computer plug (I can send you the circuit). If you do get voltage then shift voltmeter to pin 24, disconnect harness plug at the wiper motor itself, set wiper control to low position. If meter reads 0 then check wiring from plug to wiper plug, if you get voltage them the body computer is bad.
In order to avoid unnecessary purchasing, I would prefer to send you the instructions and wiring diagrams so you can see it first hand. But in any case, see if you can find the body computer and check out the plug sockets for water and dirt that might have shorted something out.

P.S. The allexpert server was acting up so that is why you sent and I received multiple questions from you.
