Chrysler Repair: Engine warm up., wintry weather, normal temperatures

Question
Is it necessary to warm up my engine in cold wintry weather and if so for how long?
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Wojtek,
Everything I have read about prolonged warming up an engine at idle says that it is not the most economical or wear-minimizing technique and in fact should be avoided. The recommended regimen is to allow the engine to run at moderate rpm for long enough to stabilize and run reliably without stalling (usually this should take much less than a minute depending on the specific characteristcs and age of the engine) and then to put the trans in drive and move at moderate rpm and speed until the temperature of the engine reaches the normal range (if you have a gauge on the dash). Not only is it better for the engine to reach normal temperatures quickly because the oil lubricates better when it it warm, but also to operate the balance of the drivetrain at moderate rpm's when it is cold so as to allow the parts to lubricate thoroughly and rubber to flex gently until they are warmed up, before running all of them at highway speeds.
So the bottom line is 'moderation in all things'.
