Chrysler Repair: Motor jumps while driving., chrysler cirrus lxi, 1996 chrysler cirrus

Question
I have a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus LXI. V6 2.5. While driving at a steady speed the the motor will jump shaking the car. It is like it is trying to shut off. It will not jump back to back. It will jump, then you go a Qtr mile and it will jump again. Then you could finish driving home and it not happen again. Sometimes when your stopped at a light it will jump and the car shuts off , but it fires right back up again. It's intermittent. I have driven it up and down the road trying to duplicate it to no avail. No computer codes at all. I changed the Temp sensor because I thought it was a cold issue only. Hot or cold, you never know when it will happen. What do you think?

Answer
Hi Allan,
To me it sounds like an electrical intermittant, not something related to the fuel supply/mixture. The fact that you don't get any codes also suggests that it may be something very fundamental that isn't monitored by the engine controller, such as the ignition switch having a flakey contact. I would try jiggling the ignition key and wires coming from the steering column base and also harnesses under the hood while at rest with the engine idling. I don't think that you can diagnose this sort of thing while driving the car, although the motion of the car might be involved you should be able to provoke the behavior manually if you shake the loose connection.
It could also be the ignition coil, the ASD relay, or an engine cam or crank sensor beginning to fail, so keep checking for codes, which should show up if/when the stutter lasts for a longer period of time.
That is an interesting gremlin. Please let me know what you find it to be which I am sure that you will.
