Chrysler Repair: ECM Replacement on 1998 T&C, population center, junk yard

Question
My van was having intermittent stalling problems which my reapir shop could not diagnose. Finally, it stalled completely and they have determined the the Engine Control Module needs replacement then reprogramming by the dealer. Are original parts really needed for this work or can I save money by using after-market? The quote for dealer programming is $150 which sounds ridiculous. Is there any other way?

Answer
P.S. The codes for trouble with the ECM are P0600 and P0601.
I suppose a completely non-communicative ECM would also be suspect. But otherwise there are about 200 codes about other possiblities. So if you can get the codes let me know what they are.

Hi Tamara,
You could look for a used module at junk yard if you live in a population center with such a yard. You need to find one from the same year van with the same type engine and trans. You can alternatively see if the junk yard can locate one nationwide via a hot line somewhere else. Then compare the price with buying a new one and reprogramming it. Are you sure the repair shop you are using is competent? ECM's are really pretty rugged so you should really be sure that is the answer via a competent readout of the fault codes. Ask them what fault codes they got. If they say none, then there are somethings that can be tested for before getting into a new ECM. Tell me which engine is in the van if you write back.
