Chrysler Repair: 86 2.2L Cooling Fan Issue - A/C Clutch Relay?, lebaron gts, chrysler lebaron

Question
Hi again Roland, I have the 1986 Chrysler LeBaron GTS 2.2L No Turbo H-Body Hatchback with the cooling fan running constantly and a relay clicking constantly under the hood. I took your advice and listened to, and felt what relay was clicking - and it actually appears to be the A/C Clutch Relay on the fender. ** This issue actually began when I turned the a/c off one day, and does not occur when the a/c is on. ** Does the A/C Clutch Relay have any effect on the cooling fan? And can I use the new Cooling Fan Relay I bought to replace the A/C Clutch Relay? They look 100% identical. Also, I've owned (and loved) this car since 1988 and I don't believe the cooling fan has ever run constantly when the a/c was on. Thanks again Roland! Jason

Answer
Hi Jason,
I would not assume that the relays are the same unless they have identical part numbers. Check the two relay sockets because my wiring diagrams show the fan relay to have 6 wires with 2 plugs of 3 wires each, while the A/C clutch relay has 3 wires and a separate slide on wire tab. The drawings show them to look differently but who knows, if they look the same they look the same. The relay on the inner fender is to 'cut out' the A/C clutch when ever you are using the A/C and you open the throttle full wide. Otherwise that relay should stay closed at all times. The fact that it is clicking all the time means that either the relay is failing or the control circuit for it has a loose connection in the socket or at the engine controller which is responsible for actuating it. So I would see whether the voltage on the dark blue wire at the 'cut out' relay is steady when the relay is clicking, and also see what the resistance to ground looks like on the dark blue/orange wire at the relay socket again with the relay in place and the engine running. If the voltages/resistances look to be steady and yet the relay is clicking it means the relay is going bad.
The outboard relay on the strut tower, with 6 wires, is the combined fan and a/c clutch relay. It is set up electrically to run the fan continuously when the a/c is running. Otherwise it only runs when the coolant sensor says the engine is getting too hot. It may be that the fan will stop running once you settle the issue with the a/c cut out relay. These two circuits are really intertwined in a complex manner. If you can't resolve it by the measurements and possibly by replacing the cut out relay, then maybe the best thing to do is postal mail you the circuit so you can go to an auto electric shop with that in hand. But see if you can resolve the clicking problem.

P.S. If you do write back do so as a 'follow up' to this response so that the thread history is not broken up into pieces that I can't follow nor can anyone else who might want to follow the question and its resolution.
