Chrysler Repair: 1997 Chrysler LHS coil problem, 1997 chrysler lhs, chrysler lhs

Question
Mr. Finston:
I have a quick question. My Check Engine light comes on every once and while. The OBD-II dispalys the error message P0352 Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction. I replaced the coil pack in June 2005, could I have a bad coil pack? Is there anything else it could be?

Thanks,

Josh

Answer
Hi Josh,
I checked the powertrain manual for the 2001 LHS and the Haynes for the '93-7 LHS. My conclusion is that if you check the wiring harness between the pcm and the spark pack and it that passes muster then either the spark pack or the PCM would be the questionable component. According to the Haynes the #2 coil driver wire is white and the connection is to pin 17 of PCM harness from pin 2 of the coil pack harness. Because the code is specific for coil B (of three A,B,C) I would think the best way to see if there is something wrong with the PCM the harness or the coil pack would be to test the pins at each unit for resistance to ground, and then the connections at each end of the harness and also that there isn't a ground in the harness wires for the 3 circuits. Thus I would measure the resistance to ground of pcm sockets 17,18, and 19 and the resistances to ground of the pins 3,1, and 2 at the coil to see if the three readings are all identical. And then check the continuity of the harness between those respective 3 pairs of connector pins/sockets. And check that none of them are grounded.
That may show an anomaly between A,B, of C spark driver circuits and identify what needs to be repaired/replaced.Also try shaking the harness while doing the measurement in case there is a intermittant disconnect or ground in the harness. That appears to be the best way to diagnose this part of the spark system. I can't be sure that 17,18,and 19 are the proper pins of the PCM because I don't have the '97 wiring diagrams specifically but that is the way it is shown in the Haynes and the '94 Chrysler shop manuals that I have. Let me know what you find out, please.
