Chrysler Repair: Chrysler Transmission Limp in Mode, chrysler cirrus, 1995 chrysler cirrus

Question
I have a 1995 Chrysler Cirrus, and ever since I have gotten it, it has had problems. The first day I bought it the check engine light has come on intermittently. Then I noticed that the transmission would lock into 2nd gear. After that the car would run terribly and stall out if the gas wasn't held down. The last problem I fixed, as it rendered the car undriveable, and I troubleshot it down to an EGR vacuum hose, I temp fixed that using heat shrink and it works fine. My main problem now is the trans, I took it in and they said that they could not find any codes, so I had assumed it was wiring. I am an aircraft electrician by trade so I figured it wouldnt be that hard to find the problem if I had a schematic diagram of the car. Problem is, I can't find one. Could you help me with this or should I look at changing the TCM or a sensor first?

Answer
Hi Michael,
Did you take the car to a Chrysler dealer for that readout?
If not then it may not have been done with a reader that is capable of accessing the fault codes for the transmission.
If the check engine light is coming on, or even if the trans is still going into limp-in mode without the light, there has to be a code of some sort set in the TCM memory. I have the '96 shop manual for the Cirrus/Stratus which has 15 pages of wiring diagrams for the trans, and I would xerox copy and postal mail them to you. But I would bet that a more valid readout is likely to give us a code to focus on rather than checking all the wiring. There should be a 16-pin data link connector under the dash that gives the readout access, but the reader has to be capable of getting the codes from not only the engine but also the trans. I wouldn't waste money on parts without further diagnosis and if necessary wiring verification.
Let me know a postal mail address and I'll get the pages to you.
