Chrysler Repair: wont start, chrysler lhs, 94 chrysler lhs

Question
94 Chrysler LHS won't start.  At first there was a clicking sound when the ignition key was turned, but later was a continous clicking and lights flashing on panel.  About 2 weeks prior was having problems with the battery connection (had battery tested it was good) replaced the connection for the positive terminal, could this be related?  My mechanic says I need to replace the starter, what do you think?  Thanks for any advice.

Answer
Hi Dee,
Before going for a new starter motor I would suggest that the battery be recharged and, if easily available, evaluated as to what current it will put out when under load. The description you give is more consistent with a weak battery which should be checked first. Is the battery approaching the end of its warranty? Have you checked the water (electrolyte) levels in the 6 cells to make sure that the top of the plates in each filler hole are fully covered?
Have you noticed a lower than normal voltage reading on the charging gauge on the dash or a warning light related to voltage charging being too low? Only after that is done and cleared would I contemplate replacing the starter motor. And if that was contemplated a check of and possible replacement of the solenoid on the motor instead of the entire motor might be evaluated.
If you can get or borrow a jumper cable and a helper vehicle, try starting it that way and see if it still does the clicking routine. If so, then that would be a reasonable way to make a decision on replacing the motor.
