Chrysler Repair: Battery, bolt head, screw head

Question
I am trying to replace the battery for a 1988 Chrysler Le Baron. The bracket that holds the battery down has the nut and screw spinning as I try to loosen it. How do I get to the screw head to hold it from moving in order to get the nut off?

Answer
Hi Bob,
I can see the drawing in the '87 shop manual that I have. If you can't get a socket fitting on the underside of the battery tray to grip the head of the inverted bolt, then I suppose the way to go is soak the nut and threads with penetrating fluid (like WD-40) overnight, and then I would try to grasp the threads that are sticking out with a pliers and try to release the rusted interface between the bolt and the nut. The main risk with this is that the tool you use to grasp the threads will damage them so the nut won't pass over those threads smoothly. So I would try first to get a thin wall socket the size of the bolt head on from underneath and then use a flex handle or ratchet handle to hold the bolt head in place. I have to believe that a thin wall socket will reach that bolt head. The bolt head is probably the same size as the nut. But you may have to buy a thin wall socket. My LeBaron is an '89 with a different design, so I can't speak with personal experience on your problem.
