Chrysler Repair: Dodge Ram SS/T Caliper Bolts, 17 wheels, numerical size

Question
I own a 1997 Dodge SS/T and can not find anyone who can tell me the correct wrench size to remove the calipers so I can change the brakes, not even the dealer can tell me. One person says "It's either a T47 or a T55" another tells me "It's a T50" Yet another tells me "It's a 3/8 Allen wrench" as does several websites I've been to, but I doubt it's an Allen wrench, because it looks like it's a star shaped bolt with 6 points (I think) It has factory 17" wheels, I wonder if this is where all the confusion is comming from? Can you PLEASE tell me what type and what size wrench I need? Or can anyone? rgrbch45@comcast.net

Answer
Hi Roger,
I suspect it is a tork bolt, of course, but its numerical size could only be determined by bringing various size torx fittings to the bolt and determine the proper size by inspection/comparison of the fits. No manuals that I have seen give that kind of detail, and because I don't have those brake units myself I can't tell you by personal knowledge. You might go to a dealer and ask if they have a new bolt in stock, and then if you brought with you a range of torx fittings that might be used (between 47 and 55) you could determine the best fit. Many tool suppliers such as Sears or its affiliated hardware stores, or Home Depot, will usually sell you a tool with the right to return it if unused and original in its packaging, so you don't have to buy and keep all of the possible ones that might fit. You could either try them at a dealer or jack up your car and see which fits, then return all the ones that don't fit. That is how I would approach this problem.
