Chrysler Repair: belt noise, technical service bulletins, country ltd

Question
2001 town & country ltd 3.8L 68k mi. I have a fairly loud noise coming from the belt or pulleys that sounds mechanical,(not a squeel - more of a rattle each time the belt goes around at idle or slightly above) It will disappear for a week or so if I spray Meguire's leather seat conditioner on the belt. Belt dressing does not help. This is the third belt, currently a Goodyear noise reduction type. All pulleys turn free and there is no play in them. Tensioner seems ok. Noise not there if I idle without a belt. A mechanic replaced the alternator thinking that was the problem. Any ideas? Thanks, MS

Answer
Hi Monte,
One problem that in the past has caused this sort of noise is when one of the various pulleys that are turned by a belt is not in the same plane as the others (either displaced laterally or tilted from being perfectly aligned). So I would try placing straight edges on those pulleys that will permit and visually establish the plane for each and then see how it matches with the planes of the other pulleys. You may have to shim one of the parts whose pulley is misaligned to get it into alignment. The other source for information would be the yearly publication volume of Technical Service Bulletins which the Corporation distributes to the dealerships which brings to light problems that are recognized that the service departments need to be aware of. I think if you went to a dealership service department and inquire they would allow you to scan thru the 2001 year volume. Chances are it would be found in section 7 which has to do with the cooling system and where belt problems are usually discussed.
I would appreciate learning what you find to be the solution.
