Chrysler Repair: fuel gauge problem, variable resistor, chrysler voyager

Question
Question
1996 Chrysler voyager fuel gauge goes down to half tank and then it stops. Appreciate any help or comments. I noticed unusual fluctuation of the needle last night
Can you give me scheme how to check or replace the tank variable resistor

Answer
Hi Shay,
The problem could be in the fuel level float unit or in the gauge. The float unit has 2 wires, a dark green signal wire that goes to the gauge on the dash and a black wire that goes to ground near the tank. If you want to check the float unit electrically you can measure the resistance between the signal wire pin and ground pin at the 5-pin plug at the fuel tank proper. The #2 and #4 pins are the opposite ends of the variable resistor that constitutes the float unit. When the tank is full the resistance across the two pins should be 8 ohms, and when the tank is empty it should read about 100 ohms, and varies between those two values proportionately as to the gas level in the tank. So you could measure it now (hung up at midscale on the gauge) and then see if it rises as you continue to drive the van. If it does rise and approaches 100 ohm as you think that you are nearing empty then the float unit is o.k. If not, then the float is not moving or it is electrically damaged. If the float is o.k. then the gauge on the dash is your problem. You can replace the float unit by remove the combined float and pump from the tank.
