Chrysler Repair: Power Windows, chrysler labaron, chrysler lebaron

Question
Hello Roland,
I have just purchased a 1993 Chrysler LaBaron convertible. The power windows in the rear do not work. Do you have any suggestions please? I would appreciate your help.
Thank you,
Janet

Answer
Hi Janet,
Everyone with a convertible has this problem. The electrial motors that power these "quarter windows" is located in the panel that is underneath the window and water routinely enters that area when it rains. There are drain holes under the car right on a body seam and directly below the windows and they are covered with a rubber flap. Usually leaves or other debris also gets in to the drain area and blocks the water from draining out so the motor gets wet and rusts.
So find those drain holes and clean them with a metal probe routinely, now and after you get them fixed.
To begin, check the circuit breaker in position #2 of the fuse block located under the dash on the driver's side. Make sure that it is not in the released position and if it is reset it and try the windows. If that doesn't fix it, then you will need to remove both of the motors and the cables that they drive to operate the windows. This involves removing the interior panel that begins at the door frame and goes under the window and around the corner. To do that you have to remove the rear seat and then release all the hardware that holds the panel in place. Then the motor and cable can be removed and examined. It might just be a matter of spraying penetrating oil on the motor armature to free it up, but then it could also need a new motor and/or a new drive cable.
I have a LeBaron coupe with inoperable quarter windows so I have not had to work on this. At the Yahoo autos group called "The Chrysler LeBaron Club" we have 1500 members most of whom have convertibles and have repaired the windows themselves. If you sign up at the Club you can then search through the back messages to find how people have fixed there windows and where to get the parts you need.
I have the 94 shop manual that shows the removeal process and would xerox and snail mail those pages to you.
So check out the resources at the Club and ask the group any specifics after you have read up a little in the message archive. And send me a postal mailing address and I'll send the pages from the manual to you.
