Chrysler Repair: swapping out engine, clutch pedal, last model

Question
Hi Roland,
I want to take the engine from a 1988 Lebaron, 4cyl, manual trans, and put it in a 1993 Lebaron, was 6cyl
automatic trans. My question is do you know of any problem areas I may run into, or conversions I may need to make, or is this going to be more trouble then it is worth?
I would appreciate any insight you can give me.
                  Thank-You

Answer
Hi Carrie,
I haven't been involved with such a swap, thought others at a Yahoo group of which I am the co-moderator (TheChryslerLeBaronClub) have apparently done it, so you could join that group and ask the question there. Things that may give you trouble: you'll need to install a clutch pedal mechanism, the front end of the exhaust systems may not match, the wiring harness for the engines will need to be exchanged, the PCM will need to be replaced with a post-'90 PCM for the 4 cyl in order to communicate with the body computer that came on the scene in  '90 (you'll need a PCM for an engine like your 4 except for it being a '90 and later), the charging systems have slightly different wiring though I haven't made a detailed comparison between the two, if the 4 is a non-turbo the fuel pump will not be correct for it, don't forget the need to change out the neutral/reverse safety starter interlock. Others who have done it can relate any issues with mechanicals. It probably can be done with some attention given to details. I believe that the last model year in which both the 4 and the 6 was but in the J-body was '92, but that may not be any reason to stop you.
