Chrysler Repair: another problem, postal mail, wrecking yard

Question
thanks again. But now I have another problem. My son "borrowed" my 86 New Yorker 2.2 ltr turbo one night. I was woken up at 1am and told the car couldnt be turned off. I stalled the engine and unhooked the battery. The ignition is in the "on" position and can turn to start. He says he didnt do anything. The key can be removed. Worn out? Can I remove the ignition?

Answer
Hi Bill,
Yes the ignition switch can be removed and replaced. I have the '85 and '87 manuals that shows how to get to it and they appear similar so the '86 should be accurately described by either. But rather than type all this info I'd prefer to xerox and  mail it to you at no charge, that way you also get the illustrations. So send me a postal mail address and I'll get it off to you today. The switch is on the left side of the column and is operated by a rod from the key mechanism. I believe some disassembly of the column is necessary to uncover the switch for removal. So if you can wait for the copies it might be worthwhile. In the meantime check at a parts store or dealer for a replacement. You could also probably scavenge a switch at a pull-it-yourself wrecking yard and get the practice at removal before attacking your car. But find out what years/models use the same switch.
