Chrysler Repair: loss of engine power during rain, splash shields, drive belts

Question
my 91 lebaron (v6/3.0) will not start if it rains or while it is raining, and if i happen to get caught in a rainstorm, the engine will lose power and stop running completely, (as if someone pulled the plug on a fan, the blades keep turing until they come to a stop)... it will roll to a stop but there is no power whatsoever going to the engine and it just dies. I cant duplicate it and i have tried to coinside with the mechanics to have them figure it out in the rain but to no avail...

but it can rain and then later that day clear up and the car will run with no problems and act as thought there wasnt a thing wrong.

as you can imagine this is a horrible feeling especially when going 70 on an interstate and you run into a situation where a sudden shower comes up and you have no where to pull off safely or quickly.

as a note... years ago i had an electrical melting/smoke under the dash which never actually became a fire.  at the time the air conditioner was running then stopped completely then the power for the windows and digital dashboard went out as well... they never replaced the electrical as far as i can tell and the ignition housing in the steering column and such was deemed the culpret although there was never anything wrong with the steering column as far as heat or smoke the smoke i saw at the time the AC went out came from the vents outside on the hood, not inside the car.

also, this car is on its 4th transmission that was replaced each time under the warranty but always with a rebuilt one not a new one..

any help advice or suggestions in a solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

i also checked the codes and got 5 5 then nothing.

thanks, sunny

Answer
Hi Sunny,
After sleeping on it, I have one more suggestion. There are three "splash shields" on the inner right fender (wheelhouse, transaxle, and engine drive belts) that are removable. Maybe you are missing one of these which is resulting in water being thrown around in the engine compartment. So go to a dealer or look at another LeBaron of the same general vintage and compare what you see.
If any are missing you can probably find it at a wrecking yard or buy it from the dealer at a much greater cost.
