Chrysler Repair: Can I bypass the A/C Compressor ?, belt pulley, electric power distribution

Question
1996 Dodge Stratus 2.0 L  4 CYL
A/C Compressor shaft is siezed - bearings fried.
As an alternative to a costly repair, could I possibly bypass the A/C Compressor by getting a shorter belt (possibly from a 96 Stratus without A/C)
in order to get the car running ?

Answer
Hi Clarke,
I don't see why not. It may also be possible to replace just the belt pulley on the compressor which I believe has a built-in bearing if that part is also shot. Then you could pull the compressor relay from the electric power distribution center so that the compressor won't engage even if someone errantly asks for A/C. Have you verified that the pulley bearing is also shot (i.e. does the belt squeal even when you don't have the A/C on)? If it isn't, then you could just remove the relay for the A/C clutch and keep your present belt set up until you can afford to replace the compressor.
