Chrysler Repair: gas leak, chrysler dealer, document scanner

Question
I just bought a 96 Chrysler town&country van with a 3.8 engine and on the front fuel line that goes to the fuel injectors it is leaking at the joint. Is this an easy fix my husband can do in the driveway,if so how does he do it?

Answer
Hi Betty,
I am unclear about exactly where the leak is located. This question came up on a 3.5L engine and when I checked at the Chrysler dealer it was determined that the leak in question was at a joint that was not intended to be separable, i.e., the only repair was to replace the entire fuel injector rail (loop). So that is a relevant question to invesigate at a dealer's parts department where they will have a diagram of the rail and then you can determine if there are replacement gaskets/fittings at that point or not. On the procedure for servicing/opening the rail, I have the instruction for doing that in a Chrysler shop manual from 1991 for the 3.8L engine. It is something that can be done by a do-it-yourself mechanic but it would be good to have the couple of pages that describe the procedure. I would be very pleased to xerox these pages and postal mail them to you if the task can wait for a day or so for delivery (I don't have a document scanner). So write back with a mailing address and I'll get it in the mail this afternoon.
If the leak is at an attachment point for one of the fuel rail ends to the fuel line from or back to the tank, then that should be repairable with a new gasket from the dealer. But again because of the fragility of the rail it would be good to follow the procedure so as not to damage it. On the 3.5 the fuel rail costs $172.
