Chrysler Repair: Chrysler Fuel Pump, chrysler new yorker, tank drain

Question
How do you replace the fuel pump in a 1990 Chrysler New Yorker? Is it on the right rear back side?

Answer
Hi Gary,
It is located in the fuel tank. If you look at the rear or the tank you will see a couple of round flanges. The one on the driver side is the fuel pump. You have to drain the tank (drain tube is on the passenger side round flange). Run the tank down as close to empty as you can before starting on the removal.
After you drain the tank you then have to remove the screws that attach the filler tube to the rear quater panel. Then remove the hoses and electrical connections at the rear of  the tank. Then suppoort the tank with a jack, loosen the mounting straps and then lower the jack slightly and remove the hose from the pressure relief/rollover valve on the top side of the tank. Then remove the straps and lower the tank. To remove the pump use a hammer and brass drift and tap carefully on the lock ring in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the pump and O-ring and pump inlet filter. Replace the filter and o-ring on the new pump and carefully tap on the lock ring clockwise to intall the new pump, but don't overtighten the pump flange or it might leak. Then reinstall the tank.
It may be the case that you don't have to drain and remove the tank on the New Yorker chassis, if you are fortunate that there is enoung clearance for its removal, but don't count on that.
