Chrysler Repair: fm radio problem, push button switch, soldering pencil

Question
Hi Roland,
I have a problem with my wife's fm portion of her am/fm/cd car radio. The cd will work and the am radio will work, but all I get is static on all of the fm channels. We had the car into the Crysler dealer a few weeks ago for repairs to the wheel bearings and about that time the fm protion quit. I checked the antenna to the back thinking it had gotten unplugged but it seems ok. Any ideas or suggestions. The car is a 2000 Crysler Cirrus
Thanks for the help
Hugh

Answer
Hi Hugh,
This may be a duplicate response, but what I would suggest is that you try to spray the am/fm push button switch with aan electronic contact cleaner available for an electronics store. It might be more effective if you removed the radio and got right to the switch. Then you might try gently flexing the circut board(s) to see if there might be a cold solder joint that you kid repair witha soldering pencil. Also look for any capacitors that look wet around the base for replacement. The shop manual says the aerial can be respnsible for AM loss of signal, but appears to not attribute that to the FM loss. As with our throw away ethic it just says replace the radio if you lose the FM!
