recently my turn signal switch stopped working but my cruise control and wipers still work even though they are on the same switch. i haven't been able to find any one who sells this part. i was wondering if there was any way i could fix this myself. i appreciate the help. thanx

Hi April,
It may not be the switch at all but rather a fuse or a relay or a combo flasher (have you tried the emergency flashers and do they work or not?). Tell me more about the year, make and model of the car, and whether the emergency flashers are working. We need to do a little more sleuthing before buying a new switch for the stalk. You may need something else that is less expensive...

Answer
Hi April,
It is a little hard to tell whether the fault is a broken turn signal switch, or that the screws that hold it in place have come loose which allows it move inside the column, or the lever arm (which disconnects from the switch proper) may have rotated around its axis counterclockwise and thus disconnected itself from the switch. If it is totally loose (holding on mainly by the wires for the cruise control and windshield wipers) I suspect the "disconnected itself". If you can sense that the lever is still attached to the switch mechanically but the whole switch seems to rotate, then I suspect the screws. I am not sure how it should feel if the switch itself is broken. In any case, you or a competent mechanic need to examine this and decide which approach to take to affect a reconnection of the lever (unless the switch is broken in which case you have to remove the steering wheel and dig down a bit to get to the switch for removal and replacement). Do you have any handy do it yourselfers around, or do you like that sort of activity? I have the '89 shop manual (for my '89 LeBaron) so I could xerox copy the pages that describe some of these procedures, though I have to admit I can't be sure of exactly how to approach each alternative without having the column to work on in front of me. I have the tilt column with a floor shifter, while you probably have the column gear shifter, correct?
So let me know a postal mailing address and I'll send you the pages about how to go about disassembling the column/lever arm and getting to the switch.
Just for a chance, see if whether when you line up the lever in what would be its regular position and the see if you can feel its end fit into a socket. If you could push in the lever arm and rotate it clockwise it might reattach itself. The main difficulty is that the lever arm also has the cruise and windshield wiper switches covering it so it may not be rotateable with removing at least the windshield switch in order to get a grip on the lever arm for that clockwise rotation.
