Answer
Hi Jen,
I have zero experience with the rear wheel drive big engines like yours. According to a brief summary that I have the engine has a a spark control computer and a feedback carburetor which makes it a bit complicated.
One other feedback loop involves an oxygen sensor which is no doubt mounted on the exhaust manifold. These oxygen sensors have a finite lifetime so if you haven't changed it lately that might solve the problem. It does sound like a problem with getting the proper fuel/air ratio, which is the job of the oxygen sensor.
Other that that it means getting into carburetor repair/tuning which is a hassle with these devices from the early '80's. You can probably get the oxygen sensor and have it installed or do it yourself for $75. Another limitation is that these systems don't have an ability to detect when they have problems the way the next generation of fuel injected engines had, so it isn't easy to find out what is wrong.
