Chrysler Repair: water pump, crankshaft pulley, shaft bearing

Question
where is the water pump on a 1997 chrysler concord
and how do i know if that is the problem?

Answer
Hi James,
You didn't describe the problem, but here is the check procedure for it. The pump is located on the front of the engine (passenger end) where all the belts are located and it is low on the front with a pulley and is adjacent to the main crankshaft pulley around which all the belts are routed. If it leeks green coolant, it will fall to the ground directly beneath it.
There are three ways to check the operation of the waterpump while it's installed on the engine. If the pump is defective is should be replaced.
Water pumps are equipped with weep or vent hole(s). If a failure occurs in the pump seal, coolant will leak from the hole. In most cases you'll need a flashlight to find the hole on the water pump from underneath the engine to check for leaks.
If the water pump shaft bearing fail there may be a howling sound at the front of the engine while it's running. With the engine off, shaft wear can be felt if the water pump pulley is rocked up-and-down. Don'tmistake drivebeltslippage due to a too loose belt for water pump failure.
A quick water pump performance check is to put the heater on. If the pump is failing due to a loose water impeller on the shaft it won't be able to efficiently circulate hot water all the way to the heater. But there could be other reasons for poor heater performance.
So consider those 3 ways to check out your pump.
