Chrysler Repair: a/c tempeture control turns but only blows hot, coolant water, xerox copy

Question
I have a 95 crysler cirrus the a/c temp control nob turn fine but no matter where you put it, it only blow hot air. It just stop working one day. The a/c still comes on just can not get it to change the temp. What can cause this and how can it be fixed?

Answer
Hi Brian,
There is a door inside the A.C./heater unit that adjusts so as to either send the incoming air to the heater core or the ac cooling core or to both of them in differing amounts of flow, which is how the temp is adjusted. That door is controlled by a cable attached to the temp control knob. The cable could be detached at one end or the other, or the sheath surrounding the cable may have come loose which in effect defeats the motion of the contol knob (the sheath moves instead of the cable). You can gain access to the cable and sheath by removing the bezel that surrounds the control unit and then some screws that hold the control unit into the console and then sliding it out of the console. Then you can check why the cable isn't functioning properly. It would be helpful to have a picture and some instructions before you get into repaing this yourself, so if you want these just send me a follow-up question giving your postal mailing address and I will xerox copy and postal mail them to you an no cost.
In the meantime, if you want to stop the heat, I believe you can set the unit on max ac/recirc mode which usually is set up to totally shut down the flow of hot coolant water thru the heater core. Then if you don't run the fan you will not activate the ac compressor. There won't be any outside air drawn thru system but at least it will shut off the heat until you fix the door control if you are feeling too hot.
