Chrysler Repair: 1995 Cirrus Salvage?, chrysler cirrus, blue book value

Question
I have a 1995 Chrysler Cirrus. The transmission recently went out (130k+). I chose to not fix it, and instead buy a new car.

It is a nice looking car (everything is straight), and minus the transmission is in pretty good shape).

I would rather not go the donation route, but I'm wondering if you have any advice on what I could do with it (take it to a junk yard?)

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi BJ,
That is a dilemma because the cost of repairing the electronic transaxles seems to be excessive. I wonder whether you had the trans controller read out to see what the fault code number(s) are which would give you a better idea of exactly what might be wrong and how much it would cost to repair? If you can "limp-in"*to a dealer or an independent shop with the necessary code reader then that might be worth knowing and having an estimate for repair.
And what is the Blue Book value of the car with a repaired transmission? Maybe you can find a buyer for it if the value of the car exceeds the cost of repairing the trans.
I agree that it is unfortunate to scrap the car or part it out if it is otherwise still usable. Maybe you can find a do-it yourself type person who would like to buy it and repair the trans himself.
If you get a readout let me know what the code numbers are and what the estimate for the repair is. We can compare notes. You might try putting it up for auction on eBay or at Craigslist.org if there is one for your local area.

*limp-in mode means the car only drives in 2nd gear which how the trans often behaves when something goes wrong with it. It allow you to drive it to get service without doing too much additional damage. But exactly what is wrong needs to be determined by the code readout procedure.
