Chrysler Repair: instrument panel, electrical gremlins, fuse box

Question
I am borrowing my mother's car (1999 Sebring convertible), and when I turned it on tonight, to go out, all of the lights on the instrument panel are out, so I can't see the speedometer or anything!  I tried the light dimmer thing, hoping that I had just turned them down, but it appears that I haven't.  So my next guess is that a fuse blew.  But I can't find the fuse box, and my mother apparently doesn't keep her owners manual in the car!  Can you tell me where the fuse box would be, and also which fuse would correspond to the instrument panel?

Answer
Hi Mary J,
I am going to have to guess a bit on this one. But I believe that the fuses are under the dash on the driver's side of the car along with another unit called the body contol module. The body control module is sort of the central brain of the electrical system outside of the engine, and so if something is wrong with the instrument panel lights the chance are good it has to do with a fuse that powers that module. So look at the labels on the fuse box (also called juction box) and identify any that are labelled for the body control module (bcm) and check those. Also maybe one would actually say "instrument panel lights".
If the fuses all check out, then the next thing to check is the plugs on the adjacent body control module. With the convertible design water can sometimes drip down on those plugs and temporarily cause electrical gremlins. So if you can see/feel water on or around the plugs try to dry it out.
That is my best suggestion on short notice and without a specific manual for the Sebring model.
