Chrysler Repair: TEMPERATURE GAUGE, resistance changes, temperature gauge

Question
FIRST, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR TAKING MY QUESTION:
1989 LABARON - 2.5 TURBO
WHEN IGNITION IS TURNED ON THE TEMP GUAGE INDICATOR BAR PEGS AND REMAINS AT THE TOP OF THE INDICATOR WINDOW. WHEN THE IGNITION IS IN OFF POSITION THE BAR DROPS DOWN ABOUT HALF WAY IN THE INDICATOR WINDOW. THE COOLING SYSTEM SEEMS TO BE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY! ANY IDEAS?
THANKS
DON

Answer
Hi Don,
I would check the resistance of the temp sending unit which is located on the left side of the block near the front of the engine (close to the water pump). See that its resistance changes as the coolant warms up. I would check that the wire (violet/yellow) from the sender to pin 9 of the left (black plug) at the electronic cluster is patent, and also check that when you remove the wire at the sender and remove the plug from the cluster that the sender wire is not grouned but rather is infinite in its resistance to ground. If all that checks out, then consider whether the cluster may be bad in that segment. There is a 2 page decision tree test of the cluster that I can xerox xopy and mail to you if all the above checks out which may reveal if the issue is with the display.
