Chrysler Repair: 91 Dodge Dynasty, dodge dynasty, hydraulic pressures

Question
When I put my dynasty into overdrive, the car lopes significantly.  When I put it in third gear, the transmission shifts through all three gears appropriately.  I have not problem driving it as long as I do not attempt to select "circle D" on the shift indicator.

Answer
Hi Rob,
The electronic transmission has the built-in capability to notice when there is a malfunction and to characterize it a a fault with a code number. The controller can be challenged to divulge its stored codes with a Diagnostic Readout Box (Chrysler DRB II). A dealer is very likely to have the tool and provide a code readout for not to high a price and then you will have a basis for knowing whether the transmission can be repaired without removing it (if it is a problem with the hydraulic pressures or valve body) or if it needs to be dimantled (any problems with clutches, etc. of a mechanical nature). An alternative might be to have the internal filter changed and the pans dropped to inspect for debris which is a sign of serious internal damage. You might comparte the cost of those two approaches. It might be a pressure problem that would be solved relatively inexpensively. But it might not, of course.
I would stay out of OD, and decide which way to go: routine maintenance in the hopes of correction (which sometimes works) or get a readout. Let me know which way you go and what results. If you get a code and a prognosis and proposed repair, let me know the code and we'll comparre notes for that code before you authorize it being done, if you like.
