Chrysler Repair: key switch malfunction, steering wheel lock, intermediate position

Question
I own a 2002 Chrysler Siebring and I am having trouble with the key switch not working.  I can insert the key but cannot turn the ignition on.  I tried bot keys and neither one work.  At first it worked sometimes and now doesn't work at all.  I need to move the vehicle away from the curb but cannot get it out of gear to roll it back.

Answer
Hi Dominick
Sometimes the key lock is bound up because the steering wheel lock is pressing on the mechanism so at to prevent the key from turning. So try to turn the steering wheel both ways to see if one or the other extremes of position, or an intermediate position, will then allow you to turn the key in the lock.
If that doesn't free up the mechanism then you might take off the the top and bottom column covers on the steering column (the ones that are below the steering wheel, held on by 2 or 4 screws on the bottom colunm cover).  Then look for the ignition switch on the left side and a rod that connects the switch to the key tumbler. Try jiggling that rod to see if it is binding up. Finally you could remove the ignition switch and examine it to see if it is mechanically bound up. If all these parts seem o.k., then the key tumbler mechanism is probably gone bad and a locksmith may be your only answer.
