Chrysler Repair: need some help, jeep grand cherokee, push button switches

Question
the interior lights in my 98 jeep grand cherokee will not turn off, i had to take out a fuse in the fuse box so my bettery won't run out.  all the doors are closed and the button to turn on and off the lights won't work, do you have any idea what else it could be?

Answer
Hi Chuy,
The first thing to do would be to inspect the push button switches at each of the four doors and rear deck to see if one of them might require a very long push-in to get the light to shut off. So close all the doors, then one at a time try to find the switch that is closed by the door, either at the door jamb or where the door meets the frame at the latching side of the door, and push on that switch manually to see if you can get it to shut off the interior lights. If you find one that will do that, then you have found the one that probably needs to be adjusted or to have a spacer added to the surface which strikes against it (say a penny affixed with epoxy) so as to drive the switch pin deeper and thus turn off the circuit. The other item to check is the switch that turns off the lights with a button. Remove it from the dash and with it in the "off" position (and with all the doors closed) try disconnecting its ground wire (black color, usually). If that shuts off the lights then the switch is stuck closed ("on") and needs to be repaired or replaced.
Finally, it could be a fault in the body control computer which mediates between these switches and the light circuit, but that is a more complex and expensive unit to try diagnose without a meter and a circuit diagram. So do the switch tests first, then you may have to try an auto electrical shop for further help with the more complex possibility. The final possibility is that one of the wires to any of these switches has been short-circuited to ground but again finding that would require a meter and some digging into the wiring with the aid of a wiring diagram.
