Chrysler Repair: Power steering, power steering fluid, diagnostic procedure

Question
Roland

My Sebring power steering fluid fell below the minimum line this winter.  I have a DTC Code 65.  I filled fluid to proper level and a little more.  The code was erased, and now has appeared again.  Is it possible I have aeration in the system causing a fault reading to the pressure switch?  If so, what should I do to correct this?

Answer
Hi Ricky,
I thought a bit more about your code and loss of fluid. I would encourage you to examine the entire power steering system to find a leak.
On the code, the switch is normally open, unless the pressure rises above 500 psi*. The code is set when the for 30 seconds or longer when driving faster than 40 mph the pressure switch is closed. I am not sure what fluid/mechanical situation would cause that high pressure to happen. A failed sensor or a shorted wire could produce a false "closed' condition.
On the air trapped question I believe if you turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a couple of time while the engine is running, that is supposed to clear any trapped air.
Let me know what you find.
*I am taking this info from the 1998 powertrain diagnostic procedure book for the 2.0,2.4, and 2.5L engines, which might well be one of the ones in your Sebring.
