Chrysler Repair: Brakes, breakdown on the freeway, bad brakes

Question
96 Twn & Country mini van. Today I just notice when I come to a rolling stop there is a crinding noise from the rear. Sounds like bad brakes to me.

Can you describe what going on? I just had my rear brakes serviced 3/15/04 I paid 296.15
2 rear wheel cyclinders 90.98
1 set rear brake shoes 54.00
1 set rear brake hardware 25.00
labor 113.00

Did they fix it or not?

thank you

Answer
Hi Michael,
Does the sound change depending upon whether you apply the brakes or not? If not, and it grinds when you just come to a 'rolling stop' then another possibility is that one of the bearings on the hub of a rear wheel is roughened and breaking down. It could also be that a brake shoe is binding even though you aren't applying it, so the wheel in question needs to be inspected. But the wheel bearing is an alternate source of grinding noise. I would check it out so you don't have a breakdown on the freeway. If it is the brake, then the shop that did the work should repair it for free, in my opinion.
