I have a squealing sound coming from my SUV that starts as soon as I am in motion and stops when I stop. I have had the brake pads checked and they are ok. The sound is loud enough to attract the attention of pedestrians and other motorists.
Have you heard of this before? What can I do to stop the squealing (apart from not moving).
Answer -
Sandy, what is the year and make.Is the sound from the front
or rear?Does the sound change when you turn,go faster or
apply the brakes ?Also brake pads can make a lot of noise,
even if they look and work well. The tech. that said your pads were good, did he know that you were looking for a
noise that concerned you, or did you just want the pads
checked.write back soon.thankyou  tm

Thanks, T.M.,
It's a 94 Montero, the sound appears to be from the rear, is not effected by turning or braking, but grows louder with speed. The brakes were checked a couple of months prior to the sound occurring. Sandy

Sandy, most of the time when a car comes in the shop for that problem we have to replace the "u-joints" in the drive shaft. The repair is not that hard if you know what you are doing. If the drive shaft is removed and repaired, make shure
the the oil seal in the back of the trans. or transfer case
does not leak after the repair.Dont let a young mechanic
do this job !let me know how i did, thankyou  ,tm

Thanks again, T.M.:
I gassed up today and noticed that the right rear wheel rim has a discoloration (bronze shade) on it unlike other rims. It wasn't there previously. I scrubbed off a bit of it and it came off. Does this added info change your thinking on the problem? I hate to be a pest, but I thought this might be important. Best Regards, Sandy

Answer
Sandy, yes it does, looks like the dust that is getting on your rim could be from a part that needs to be looked at a little closer. Good news though, most repair shops or
tire dealers will check your brakes for free !!!good eye
Sandy,if it looks like a mouse, and squeeks like a mouse--
hope to here from you soon, thankyou  tm
