Chrysler Repair: catalytic converters, chrysler cirrus, emissions test

Question
I need a catalytic converter.  Do I have to buy a new one or can I purchase a used one or from a junk yard?  I also need a transmission to pass smog.  This vehicle has had the transmission replaced once with the previous owner. What is the history on these cars as far as transmissions and brakes.  I have to replace brakes very often. Can you inform me about this type of vehicle? My car is a Chrysler Cirrus 2.4L with AC, and 15" tires on 14" rotors.

Thank You, Cheryl

Answer
Cheryl,
You can buy one at a wrecking yard, providing you can find one.  They are monitored by the EPA and are stricly controlled.(At least where I live) I'm personally not a fan of certain parts being  "USED", cat's being one of them.  Also, I am confused by something you said.  "I need a transmission to pass smog?"  The emissions test is for your vehicle's engine emissions.  No test for trans. Brakes are  a weak point on some years of this vehicle.  As far as the transmission.  Normally what i've seen is a retainer break loose in the transaxle more often than not breaking the case.  Trans still shifts fine until trans fluid level drops too low to be effective due to leak. If I can be of any further assistance please don't hesitate to get back to me.
