Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury with 318/V8 and auto matic transmission, Checking Auto. Transmission fluid

Question
Does transmission have to be in gear with motor running to check transmission fluid level or can it be left in park with engine running?...thanks

Answer
Hello Sue,

Transmission in Park, Engine idling and fluid warm (just drive the car a bit before checking) to ensure an accurate level. (And parking brake on, of course, for safety.)

Good additional tests to do when checking fluid is to observe color and smell. Color should be a cherry red and you should not smell any burning. If fluid looks yellowish, that's varnish and fluid and filter should be changed immediately. Burned smell could indicate some mechanical issues inside and prompt a check by a reputable transmission specialist.

Best of luck with your MOPAR!
