Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1973 Chevy Impala wont start, 1973 chevy impala, starter solenoid

Question
checked battery power,no sound when cranked but good battery

Answer
Hello Preachreese:

First, check wiring from the battery to the starter motor. If OK, check the starter by temporarily connecting the primary (small terminal) on the starter solenoid (the round canister on top of the starter)to the large terminal. If the starter is OK, it will spin. If no, starter is bad.

If you replace the starter, get a quality unit from either Delco or dealer as opposed to a rebuilt from a big box automotive store. The reason is that these rebuilts are often of sub-standard quality and you'll end up replacing the starter multiple times before getting a good one.

Best of luck,

Bob
