Classic/Antique Car Repair: Packard rear end ratio, Packard Overdrive

Question
I have a 1937 Packard 120c with standard 3 speed transmission. I would like to install a more high way friendle rear end. Are there any later model Packard or other manufactures rear axle  assyembly that would work?

Answer
Hello John,

Investing in O/D for 120 and particularly 110 Packards transforms them as road cars! So while I've seen Chevrolet rear ends used successfully, there were still bolt pattern issues, etc. to deal with, not to mention authenticity issues.

You'd achieve the same end installing a Packard overdrive unit and keep the car authentic at the same time. These units were very reliable and installation is straight forward, as long as you're careful to assemble the complete conversion kit beforehand.

Consider overdrive instead of rear end replacement--I think you'll like it!
