Classic/Antique Car Repair: Change fluids on car sitting for two years, clutch fluid, clutch plate

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I have a 1940 Hudson that has been sitting for two years. I have started it every few months over that time however about 6 months ago I developed a carburetor problem and could not start it.

I have had the carburetor rebuilt and I am ready to reinstall it and start the car. I need to know about changing all the fluids. Do I need to change the oil, in the engine, the grease in the rear end, etc. before I begin to drive the car?

Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: There are a million different opinions on this question but if it was my car I would at least change the engine oil and bleed the brakes and make sure that the brake system has fresh fluid. The rest of the fluids, depending on how long they have been in use, should be ok. This vintage Hudson used a cork clutch plate and the clutch cover was sealed. There should be about 1/3rd or a pint of fluid in the clutch assembly. If the clutch chatters or does not engage smoothly then this fluid should be changed.

QUESTION: Brad,

As a follow up about changing the clutch fluid. What type of modern fluid can I use for this cork clutch plate?

Thanks,
Marvin

Answer
The fluid, trade named Hudsonite by Hudson, is available from Hudson parts guys. The last time that I serviced a Hudson I got the fluid from these folks. It was about 5 or 6 dollars plus shipping:
