Classic/Antique Car Repair: i-6 mustang, valve train, valve timing

Question
Hi, i have an I-6 mustang 3 speed with a one barrel with a brand new exhaust manifold everything is stock and while i was running it on the freeway for the first time it overheated and will now always run hot i was wondering what it could be that is wrong....I also have another question.I was wondering what i could do to increase torque without decreasing horsepower(the cheaper the better)i would like to see it get to 60in around 5 sec i have asked around and it has been done but i could not find out all of the facts about it.Thanks in advance for any help

Answer
Hello Al,

Your overheating is likely caused by dirt in the block and/or heater/radiator. Do a through coolant flush, fresh coolant and start there.

The only sure way to increase torque without losing HP is by modifying the valve timing. This would involve changing out the camshaft for one with a more agressive profile. This is a bolt on task but will involve some $$, not a lot, but not super cheap either as you'll be getting into the valve train and may find some other issues when you open it up.

To get from 0-60 in under 6 sec. is going to take in excess of 300 horsepower in a Mustang. This is V-8 or race tuned 6 category, nither one is cheap. Recommendation: make the most of what you've got and if you still need more HP, drop in a 289 or 302.
