Classic/Antique Car Repair: no spark, good luck jack, ford model

Question
QUESTION: Hi Jack i am helping a friend with his 1930 ford model a. He went to jump start the car but hook up the cables the wrong way and melted the black box that mounted on the firewall i repaird the melt wires but still no spark. I have power on both sides of the coil all the time key on or off any sugestions or is their a fuse located some where. I also bought a new battery and being a positive ground can you tell me how to properally boost the vehical. when we took the ignition coil off he did not mark which wires went where does the red wire go to the positive side of the coil or the neg side. Thanks Enzo

ANSWER: You are supposed to have both sides of the coil hot with the key off. Connect the red wire to the +side of the coil. The passenger side ofthe coil goes to the ignition switch, then to the dist then to the movable point arm.  Turn the key on and be sure the points are closed. This should ground the pass side of the coil and charge the coil.  Snap the points with your finger and the coil should fire when held near a ground.
I don't understand. boost the vehicle???
The only fuse I know of is one mounted on top of the starter. A lot of people added one there.
Are you sure it is set up for 6 volts and positive ground.  Some people changed to  12 volts and screwed up the system.
Go to YouTube and search jackbahm. I have a video there on how to trouble shoot a model a.
Also, go to blurb dot com  and search for my books. I have one there that you can view on model a tips. I have it set up so you can see it all. That should help you.
Good luck.
Jack

QUESTION: Thanks for getting back so soon. i'm pretty sure it is a 6 volt positive ground how do u boost it with a newer car is it positive to positive and neg to neg or do you reverse the cables.I traced the red wire from the positive side of coil and it attaches to the outside of the ignition switch is this correct. i also have power to both sides of the coil when ignition key is turned to the on postion. thanks again Enzo

Answer
The power goes from the passenger side of the coil up to the ignition switch, then down to the distributor and finds it way to the movable point arm without ever being grounded.  Make sure of this.
To jump start it, use a 12 volt battery with jumper cables and connect pos to pos and neg to neg., but be careful.  Don't make any sparks near the battery.  Best to go positive from the jumper battery to the model A frame away from the battery.
Good luck.  jack
