Classic/Antique Car Repair: over heating 351 windsor 69 fastback, radiator hose, fan shroud

Question
this motor has been completely rebuilt. although all i did was the top half. okay this car overheats all the time.i have changed the thermostat twice. new radiator, electric fan, tranny cooler,6 blade flex fan,and new radiator cap. top radiator hose is screaming hot while the bottom is cold. need some help if u can.

Answer
Hello Marc,

Top and bottom radiator hose temperatures tell the tale to me: water is not circulating effectively through the radiator. Was the radiator new,new or have a rebuilt core? The later can still be partially plugged if the "rodding out" was not correctly or effectively done.

If the radiator's OK, I'd start checking other items you didn't mention that could affect flow/pressure like the water pump. Are the impellers in good shape? Some engines (not sure about 351--ask Summit Equipment?)have a high performance, high flow pump option.

Finally, was your car originally fitted with a fan shroud? If it was and is missing now, replace it. You'd be amazed how much a shroud affects cooling performance.

Hope these suggestions help--I know how frustrating a problem like this can be. Finally, if all else fails, go back to the engine block itself. Was the car overbored? Overboring, even within accepted limits, can remove enough block material to make an engine run hotter than stock.

Good luck,

Bob
