Classic/Antique Car Repair: Removing real axle bearing from axle shaft.l, wheel bearing grease, graham paige
QuestionRe: 1929 Graham Paige Model 612 with tapered rear axle.
I have pulled the axle out just far enough to pop the bearing cup out. I have blocked the bearing from going back into the axle housing and hit the axle but the bearing will not budge. How is the bearing properly removed? I have not pulled the axle all the way out because I do not know whether this will cause problems inserting it back in the axle housing. If the axle can be removed and reinserted easily without causing more work I can take it to a shop with a hydraulic press and have the seal removed.
Thank you for your help.
AnswerYou can remove the axle without any problem. Them use a hydraulic press to remove the bearing from the shaft. If you are doing the job or standing there pack rags around the bearing before you start to press. I have seen those old bearing shatter and send shrapnel flying across the shop. Then press the new bearing on, pack it with wheel bearing grease and re-install.
