Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1962 Rambler trans leak, transmission stop leak, leak fluids

Question
Mr. Bullock,

I always find a puddle of trans fluid after the car sits for a while without use.  The dipstick indicates low and when I add enough fluid fill it, it leaks the fluid I put in.  I assume it is more than a seal leak.  Can I drive the car with the level at low?

Answer
Hi Rick:
You should always check the fluid only when the transmission
is hot (e.g. been driven for 15 to 20 minutes) and on a level
surface. All older cars tend to leak fluids because the seals
tend to dry out and shrink over time. When a car is driven everyday,
the seals stay wet and swollen, which keeps it from leaking.

You can still drive it with a low level, but I wouldn't take it on
any long trips. Also, watch how she shifts when the fluid is low.
If she still shifts fine, you are okay for short drives.

You may want to start doing the following...

1. Drive her more often.
2. Add transmission Stop Leak instead of fluid.
