Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1953 ford crestline, shift linkage, 1953 ford crestline

Question
hello Brad, could you guide me through the procedure in removing the steering column from the steering box ( non power ) on a 1953 ford crestline sunliner. Thank You

Answer
Ok, I resume that you have the steering wheel off. Down at the base of the column where it goes through the floor peel back the carpet. There should be a plate around the column that is screwed to the floor board, remove the plate. Now under the hood remove the shift linkage from the shifter arms. Where the column meets the steering box there should be a clamp around the column, loose and spread the clamp. Now with a convertible you have it easier, as you can lower the top and not have to loosen the steering gear box from the frame. At this point the column should slide up over the shaft. You will have to turn the column to get the shift arms aligned with the hole in the floor board but it should be a piece of cake from here.
