Classic/Antique Car Repair: classic car, 1954 Packard troubleshooting

Question
i have a 1954 packard clipper super straight 8. i cannot get spark into the points.i have changed the points, coil and condenser.

Answer
Hello Jim,

If you can't get power to the points, the problem is in your primary ignition system. This  means everything from the battery to the ignition switch, and coil including checking all grounds and connections for opens, shorts and corrosion. I can only give you general guidelines as this is a multi-step process that's too long to cover here. What I can do is give you some tips and suggestions where and how to get started.

Yes, this is an involved process akin to peeling back the layers of an onion. I'd suggest getting a wiring diagram for the car and start tracing back the wiring with a continuity meter starting  with either the coil or the battery. I've found it useful to check major components first and focus on the simplest things first ie. is the battery good with clean, well grounded cables? If so, are you getting power to the ignition switch and so on.

And, since every car has it's quirks, joining your local Parkard Owners Club can plug you into a whole lot of expertise. Most clubs have specialists by model year and can be invaluable for tips, tricks and quirks.

Best of luck to the "Man That Owns One"
