Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1952 meteor steering (adjustment), steering gearbox, pitman arm

Question
I have just gotten a 52 meteor w/ a flathead 8, the car is great except for the steering, there is too much play at the steering wheel and I have no idea how to adjust this problem. The tie rods/balljoints/idler&pitman arm all seem to be fine, can I adjust the amount of play at the steering wheel?

Answer
Hi Chris:
Follow the steering rod down to the steering gearbox.
There is usually a large screw and nut on the top or side.
To adjust steering, you have to loosen the nut, then turn
the screw a couple of turns clockwise. However, if you have
more than a 1/2 in of play in the steering wheel, the steering
gearbox itself is most likely bad and you will need to replace it.
