Classic/Antique Car Repair: Electrical, volt charger, volt battery

Question
Replace points, plugs, condenser, rotor, distributor cap and body, and timed my 1930 Ford Model A. Didn't have time to start it, so placed a deltran tender plus 8volt 1.25 amp slow charger on battery(8volt) and came back in two weeks. The battery was dead, the positive terminal extremely hot and no indicator light showing on the charger. Also, not sure if it could matter or not, the key was left in the ignition in the off position. Could it be the battery or the charger? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
If you have an 8 volt battery and an 8 volt charger, that should not be the problem.  Take a close look and see if you had the red wire from the charger connected to the Positive (ground) terminal on the battery.  I assume you still have it set up for Positive ground.  I don't think you hurt anything but the battery.  As long as the key was off, the coil should be OK.  Not sure about the generator or alternator.  You really don't need 8 volts.  6 works just fine.
Let everything cool off and try to attach the charger, plus to plus,(make sure) and see if the battery will take a charge.  My guess is that you had the charger hooked up wrong.
Good luck and let me know what you find.
