Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1950 studebaker champion, studebaker drivers club, studebaker champion

Question
hi robert, i have a 1950 studebaker and im wondering if you would be able to point me towards good parts sources. i am specifically lloking for a small block studebaker v8 from around the same year. im also wondering if the original 3 on the tree 3 speed transmission will bolt up to a v8 as it originally had the straight 6. any information is greatly apreciated. thanks, austin.

Answer
Hello Austin,

I'm not a Studebaker expert although I am somewhat familiar with your particular car. The best source of parts would be Hemmings Motor News followed by parts and advice from the local chapter of your Studebaker Drivers Club. The later club could also confirm transmission interchange for the V8.

One additional area to look at if you go V8 are the brakes. According to some Stude. guys I've talked to, 1950 brakes are marginal even with the 6 and were greatly improved for the 1951 model year, probably to handle the V8. A '51 to '50 brake swap is a bolt in so I understand.

Good luck on this wonderful car!

Bob
