Classic/Antique Car Repair: 64 Impala Coupe Starter, 64 impala, chevy dealer

Question
I bought a 64 impala coupe that didnt come with a starter.. it has a 327 engine and a 3spd manual transmission on the column.. was wondering what kind of starter i need?  Also, I am told that the 64 impalas with automatic transmissions have the same starter as the ones with the manual transmissions.  Is that true?  Thanks for your help...

Answer
Hello Roger,

A starter motor for a 327 should be the same regardless of transmission. Go to either a reputable auto parts store or your Chevy dealer and they can fix you up. Be aware that you may have to pay extra at the auto parts store as you will not have an old starter to trade in as a "core" Cores are rebuilt and recycled.

Caution: Consider buying a new starter from the Chevy dealer as opposed to a rebuilt from your local auto parts store even though the later will be cheaper. Reason?? Rebuilt starters have a terrible reputation for quality. No matter what the auto parts store says, I've seen rebuilt parts, like a starter, fail 2 and 3 times requiring replacement each time. Best to buy a new Delco starter for reliability.

Good luck!
