Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1956 Chevy Backup lights, backup lights, steering column

My backup lights are on anytime the ignition is on and in any position on the column, can you tell me how to get them to go off and come on when is in reverse.

The switch for the back up lights is on the base of the steering column. The switch is either defective or miss adjusted. Locate the switch and disconnect the wires. If the lights go out you have found the problem. If they do not go out there is a problem in the wiring and it will need to be chased.
